About Us
History
Haneefiya America was established in October 2005 as an islamic non-profit organization as a result of a high demand, need and desire to know and better understand Islam. Three brothers in Islam decided to register a Non Profit Organization “Haneefiya America” in the District of Columbia. The initial goal of the organization was to build a platform for all Muslims to better comprehend Islam and to promote peace in our community and in America in general.
Prior to the creation of Haneefiya, The three brothers were teaching Quran, hadith and siira in his house to children in the community. Every Friday, “Wazifa” and “Hadaratul Jummah” were conducted in Shaikh El Hadji Sall home in addition to studying Islam and the Tarikha Tijanniya through Islamic lessons and Zikr and later on such programs were expanded every Thursday and Sunday night. As the school and Hadara grow bigger, we met with other brothers in the community, who are interested on our endeavor, to aggressively find an area that would host both the Zawiya and the school. A decision was made to form a new entity under Haneefiya America which was named “Zawiya of the Greater Washington Area” or “ZAGWA”. Our objective since the beginning is “Up Right” and “to worship none but Allah (swt) Alone”, to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with the strict teaching of the wholly Quran and hadith. This lead us to embrace “tassawuf” which is the method we use to teach and practice Islam.
